Her Story

Makenna’s childhood was similar to many others: she went to school, played with Polly Pockets, and enjoyed a good Pop-Tart. Makenna was especially close with her siblings and cousins, a skill which allowed her to build deep friendships from a young age. She was a continuous adventurer, loyal friend, and audaciously loving individual. Any time spent with Makenna was sure to include new music, thought-provoking conversation, and an abundant amount of laughter.

In 2018, Makenna began her journey to a healthier life. She pursued this goal with tenacity and the support of her friends and family. Within a few months, she experienced encouraging progress and was beginning to feel excitement for where this journey could lead.

Then the unthinkable happened. Despite having done everything right, Makenna fell into the unlikely .001 percent. Experiencing unforeseen complications from a low-risk surgery, Makenna died of a heart attack just weeks after her twentieth birthday.

Makenna’s time on earth was filled with love for many things. She loved stories immensely, attempting to write several books and reading what must’ve been hundreds more. Makenna loved moments; not just the good ones, but even the unsuspecting ones. She loved  tiny boxes, putting her hair in a messy bun, flannels, travel, perfectly manicured eyebrows…

But most importantly, Makenna loved Christ and the people around her. Every day was infused with a radical, often illogical love, drawing  in those deemed unwanted by society. She had a heart for the friendless, the homeless, the unborn, and just about everyone else. Her love went beyond empathy and into relationship: it was an active love that broke down barriers and opened doors.

The MNK Legacy Project was started with one goal in mind: to continue her legacy of determined, seemingly unending love. To follow her example in loving anyone and everyone in proximity, in whatever ways they may need. To building relationships where judgement has no place and kindness overflows. To touch souls and change lives through the demanding work of being present.
